Urban Agriculture

The urban core is often referred to as a food desert, and the Green Impact Zone is no exception. Zone residents, many of whom rely on public transportation, do not have easy access to fresh, healthy produce. (See the food access map.) But urban gardening in the Green Impact Zone is about much more than growing fresh fruits and vegetables. Community gardening helps strengthen neighborhoods by putting vacant lots to productive use and protecting natural resources. Residents can supplement their incomes by growing and selling produce, and fight obesity with healthier diets and increased physical activity.

The Sowers of Sustainability program offers select residents in each neighborhood of the Green Impact Zone® an opportunity to attend free community gardening workshops and help select locations to build rain gardens in their neighborhood. The program includes both classroom sessions, held at the Green Impact Zone office, and hands-on demonstration projects in the community.
