Weather radios donated to help keep zone residents safe
Residents along the Brush Creek Corridor are all too familiar with the dangers of devastating floods, as well as the tornadoes and high winds that are common in the midwest. Now is the time — before severe weather begins — to prepare for the inclement weather that may be just around the corner.
To help local neighborhoods be better prepared for emergencies, the Midland Radio Corporation and the Kansas City Chapter of the American Meteorological Society, in coordination with Brush Creek Community Partners and the Green Impact Zone, have donated all-hazard weather radios to 20 community facilities along Brush Creek.
Several recipients received their weather radios during an event held at the Nutter Ivanhoe Neighborhood Center, home of the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council, on March 11.
Organizations that received the donated radios include:
- Blue Hills Neighborhood Association
- Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center
- Brush Creek Community Center
- Christian Fellowship Ministries
- Green Impact Zone
- Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council
- Paraclete Manor
- Swope Health Services
- University of Missouri-Kansas City Campus Police
Weather radios provide constant, useful and up-to-date weather information. They are equipped with a special alarm tone that will sound an alert and give immediate information in a life-threatening situation.
Individuals may purchase their own radios for a reduced price of $29.95 at area Price Chopper stores through Project Community Alert, a partnership between local emergency managers, Price Chopper and Midland Radio. More than 90,000 area residents have taken advantage of this program.
