Community Event and Information Fair a Success
The Green Impact Zone hosted its first community event and information fair on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Paseo High School.
Residents of the zone learned about opportunities related to weatherization, home ownership, energy efficiency, jobs and job training, and youth programs.
The free event offered residents an opportunity to become involved with their respective neighborhood associations and will also include refreshments and entertainment, with special guest Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show, and founder of REACH Media Inc., the Tom Joyner Foundation, and BlackAmericaWeb.com.
Kansas City Power & Light, which recently received notice that its $48 million grant application to create a "smart grid" in the Green Impact Zone and adjoining areas was approved, had displays and demonstrations of new energy-saving technology and devices that will be available to residents they serve.
Representatives from a number of partner organizations, including the city of Kansas City, Mo., KCATA, the Metropolitan Energy Center, Habitat for Humanity KC, HomeFree USA, and Swope Health Services had booths at the event to share information with residents about available services and take applications for certain services, such as the city's home weatherization program.
